Event Is Free and Open to the Public Sunday, June 18, in the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater

MIAMI, (May 31, 2023) – The 2023 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) will close out its five-day event with the annual Community Day taking place on Sunday, June 18, at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater, 819 NW 2nd Ave, Miami, from noon to 5:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

This year’s program will feature two special screenings from Max, hit comedy series Rap Sh!t and the all-new animated Young Love. The Rap Sh!t screening will be followed by a talkback with creator and executive producer Issa Rae and showrunner Syreeta Singleton. Following the Young Love screening, Oscar-winning director Matthew A. Cherry will discuss his highly anticipated upcoming series. ABFF will be available to a global audience June 19-25 on ABFF PLAY(https://abffplay.com/).

ABFF’s Community Day, now in its 9th year of partnership with the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB), provides a place where festivalgoers and the local Miami community can experience dynamic programming from emerging artists and established industry creatives. Inspired by family and community, GMCVB supports ABFF’s mission to facilitate more involvement from Miami natives, provide education about television and film entertainment, exposure to resources, and promote artistic collaboration.

Young Love expands on the animated short Hair Love, which centered around the relationship between an African American father, his daughter Zuri, and the most daunting task a father could ever come across – doing his daughter’s hair for the first time. Filled with comedy and heart, the all-new animated series Young Love is an honest look into the world of the Young family – including millennial parents Stephen and Angela, their daughter Zuri and her pet cat Rocky – as they juggle their careers, marriage, parenthood, social issues and multi-generational dynamics, all while striving to make a better life for themselves.

Issa Rae, who served as ABFF’s 2022 Festival Ambassador, created and starred in the Peabody award-winning HBO series Insecure, which garnered multiple Emmy^® and Golden Globe^® nominations and wins. Via her production banner HOORAE, Rae has also produced audience favorites A Black Lady Sketch Show, Sweet Life: Los Angeles and the upcoming Project Greenlight on Max.

Chicago native, Matthew A. Cherry is a former NFL wide receiver turned filmmaker who played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cincinnati Bengals, Carolina Panthers and the Baltimore Ravens. In 2020 his short film, Hair Love earned him Academy Award for Best Animated Short. In addition to previously consulting for MonkeyPaw Productions and executive producing Spike Lee’s highly acclaimed BlacKKKlansman, Matthew has also directed multiple episodes of television, including Black-ish, Saved By The Bell, Abbott Elementary, The Wonder Years, Clean Slate and more. Additionally, Matthew’s first feature film, The Last Fall, was inspired by his own experiences playing in the NFL and starred Lance Gross and Nicole Beharie.

LOS ANGELES, (May 5, 2023) – The American Black Film Festival (ABFF) today announced its 2023 Talks Series lineup, featuring conversations and panels with award-winning directors, producers, top-line talent, music composers and social media influencers, including the 2023 Festival Ambassador Lena Waithe. The annual Community Day rounds out the five-day festival, providing a place for festivalgoers and the local Miami Beach community to experience and engage in encore presentations. The 27th annual ABFF will take place in Miami Beach June 14-18 and will be available to a global audience June 19-25 on ABFF PLAY (https://abffplay.com/)

“We are excited to present a compelling slate of conversations from leading storytellers across film, television, music and social media platforms that are empowering and entertaining,” said Nicole Friday, festival producer, president and COO, ABFF Ventures. “The Talks provide the audience with first-hand access allowing them to engage and learn from creatives and industry leaders. That’s the magic of the festival.”

Highlights include opening night remarks from multi-hyphenate Emmy-winner and Hillman Grad founder Lena Waithe, who will share an exclusive onstage look into her journey in a one-on-one conversation, “The Lena Waithe Effect,” sponsored by American Airlines. Tabitha Brown and husband Chance Brown will take the stage with a candid conversation — “That’s Our Business,” delivered by UPS. Kirk and Tammy Franklin (The One) will join LisaRaye McCoy (Asking for a Friend) in a lively discussion presented by TV One Networks. Yvette Nicole Brown and comedian Kym Whitley share gems in “Act Your Age” presented by Bounce TV. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip hop is Xfinity Original Series “Hip House.” Morgan Rhodes (The Color Purple) and Carolyn Owens (Cherish the Day) come together to discuss the world of music supervision in “WBD Access Music Supervisor Panel; and Warner Bros. Pictures will share the “ABFF First Look: The Color Purple – A Bold New Take on a Beloved Classic.” Culminating the festival will be a special screening of MAX’s all-new animated series “Young Love” from Matthew Cherry (Hair Love). Annual festival pleaser events include: the 26th HBO Short Film Award Showcase, hosted by Bevy Smith, featuring five shorts from emerging filmmakers who compete for the prestigious award; and the Best of the ABFF Awards, hosted by Emmy-nominated actor/author Dondré Whitfield, where the 2023 independent film awards and talent contest winners will be presented.

The live festival culminates on Sunday, June 18 with its annual ABFF Community Day in partnership with the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau as part of its commitment to inform, educate and provide opportunities in the entertainment industry to the local community. WITH RECORD-BREAKING SUBMISSIONS, U.S. AND INTERNATIONAL FILMMAKERS BRING INNOVATIVE STORYTELLING AND PERSPECTIVE TO THE 27TH EDITION

LOS ANGELES, (April 20, 2023) – The 2023 American Black Film Festival (ABFF) today announced its lineup of narrative and documentary features. This year’s festival, which takes place live in Miami Beach June 14-18, followed by a virtual segment June 19-25 on ABFF PLAY (https://abffplay.com/), showcases the best of emerging artists from the U.S and Internationally.

Widely considered the premiere film festival attracting a wide range of Black storytellers and diverse voices, the ABFF provides a unique platform for filmmakers to showcase their work to an enthusiastic audience and potential buyers. With double the submissions of last year, the festival will feature a varied group of independent filmmakers from the USA, United Kingdom and Mexico during its five-day run. Winners of the films in competition will be announced during the “Best of ABFF Awards” hosted by Emmy-nominated actor/author Dondré Whitfield on Saturday, June 17.

The 2023 lineup showcases a number of world premieres including Murder City , produced by filmmaker Oz Scott and Kevin Garnett, starring Michael Colter; Jagged Mind , directed by Kelley Kali; and Phels High , starring Omari Hardwick, Allen Maldenado and Elise Neal. Producers Oz Scott and Kevin Garnett, also bring their highly anticipated feature film Cinnamon , starring Pam Grier and Damon Wayans.

LOS ANGELES, (November 2, 2022) – ABFF Ventures LLC today announced Emmy Award®-winning writer, creator, actor and founder of Hillman Grad Lena Waithe will serve as the ambassador for the 2023 American Black Film Festival (ABFF). As ambassador, Waithe, who has been an influential advocate for under-represented storytellers in Hollywood, will help bring awareness to ABFF’s mission of showcasing Black talent and discovering new voices and will collaborate with the festival for one-of-a-kind moments. The 27th ABFF will be held June 14-18 in Miami Beach followed by a virtual event June 19-25 on ABFF PLAY, https://abffplay.com/.

“Lena is a powerhouse in the film and television industry and a trailblazer for emerging creative artists,” said Nicole Friday, festival producer and president of ABFF Ventures LLC. “Her commitment to elevate diverse voices personifies ABFF’s commitment to diversify Hollywood. We are excited to have her unique perspective and talent as our 2023 ABFF Ambassador.”

Continuing its legacy to empower Black artists and showcase a wide range of entertainment content, in 2023 ABFF will introduce three new cultural initiatives to its robust lineup including “About Women,” which will highlight the work and support comradery among women of color in the film and television industry; “Pro-Hollywood,” highlighting how professional athletes are using their platform to impact diversity in the entertainment industry; and “ABFF Pride,” a new series of screenings and talk events centered on the LGBTQIA+ community aptly timed to take place during Pride Month. The festival will continue to feature studio premieres independent films, master classes, panels, talent showcases, networking and hospitality events.

Waithe’s connection to the ABFF brand was previously established as an honoree at the ABFF HONORS, a coveted award show that salutes excellence in television and film. Waithe received the “Industry Renaissance Award” which is presented to content creators whose exemplary work in film and television contributes to changing perceptions of people of color in the entertainment industry.

As founder and chair of Hillman Grad Lena oversees a slate of projects that give marginalized storytellers access to the industry, including projects at Warner Bros., Netflix, BET, Disney, Amazon, Universal, Focus HBO, HBO Max and Showtime. Her company most recently negotiated an exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, which includes HBO Max, cable and broadcast networks.

Waithe created and executive produced the critically acclaimed Showtime series THE CHI, which has received a Peabody Award nomination, and she also received two NAACP Image Award nominations. Her semi-autobiographical series, TWENTIES, which she writes and executive produces for BET has been praised for being the first primetime series starring a masculine presenting Queer woman of color in a lead role. Recently, Waithe executive produced the film BEAUTY for Netflix, and is currently working on producing a Sammy Davis Jr. biopic. Other upcoming projects include: the feature directorial debut of A.V. Rockwell’s A THOUSAND AND ONE which is set for a March 2023 release; CHANG CAN DUNK for Disney+; and BEING MARY: THE MARY TYLER MOORE DOCUMENTARY, directed by James Adolphus.

On the acting front, Waithe can be seen in the critically acclaimed third season of MASTER OF NONE: MOMENTS IN LOVE on Netflix, which she co-wrote and executive produced. Waithe received an Emmy? Award in the category of “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series,” for the series’ “Thanksgiving” episode making her the first Black woman to ever do so. Her credits also include HBO’s WESTWORLD, Justin Simien’s horror satire BAD HAIR, Steven Spielberg’s READY PLAYER ONE, Netflix’s #BLACKAF and their animated series BIG MOUTH, NBC’s THIS IS US and many more.

Waithe made her feature film screenwriting debut with Universal’s QUEEN & SLIM, directed by Melina Matsoukas and starring Academy Award® nominee Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner. An advocate for queer representation throughout the industry, Waithe has been honored with such recognitions as The New York City LGBT Community Center’s “Trailblazer Award,” a GLAAD “Media Award,” The Trevor Project’s “Hero Award,” the MTV Awards “Trailblazer Award,” and OUT Magazine’s “Artist of the Year.”

Call for Submissions Is Now Open
